President's Message

When I first got involved with United Way nearly four years ago, I had no idea of what the organization was about, what it provides to the community or how it receives its funding.

It was a baptism of fire to learn about the tremendous good that the organization has provided for decades, and the importance of the services that the group's fantastic agencies provide for individuals and families in need.

In these times of financial hardship and government program cuts, contributions both large and small can mean the difference between going hungry and being fed, between having a place to sleep or having none, between pulling one's self out of poverty or being dragged into the depths of despair.  Our contributors and agencies do that, and more, in a way we can all be proud of.

The local United Way Board of Directors serves as your watchdog, insuring that funds are spent in the best manner possible and giving the most benefit.  Each dollar contributed to United Way is directed to people - - not buying a coffee machine or a salary.  United Way board members are volunteers, and only a small portion of the funds it handles is used for the essentials of operation.  This reflects the agencies that we support - where volunteers are also key.  They provide the human touch, where each and every person who appeals for help is treated withg dignity and respect.  For those who receive assistance, it is a Godsend.  And for those who support the cause, it is an equal blessing.  They can feel good about helping others, and rely on the fact that it is being done in the generous spirit in the which the gift was given.

With this background I appeal to our loyal supporters, and to those who have never before contributed.  Please give and give generously.  Participate in United Way activities in the community or volunteer for one of the many local agencies.  Support the program that has been providing assistance in a way that few others can.  By giving tax deductible contributions to United Way, you support "what matters in the community," and make all of our lives better for it.

Thank you.
